The Silk Road School (SRS) basketball team went heads on with their opponent from the Financial Class 2&4 (grade 4) at Football&Basketball Center of Olympic Sports Centeron Sunday, 24th November 2019, at 4pm. The teammembers were Gabriel HimieNeufville, Jr., Giordano Faccani, Isidore CoumaSene, Rafael Pina Sturla, Satyam Negi and TagneToikadeThierry. Theyhad represented SRS in the basketball tournamentsince the13th October 2019.Although being on the older side of age and lack of practice, the team won 5 out of the 6 games in the whole tournament.
Isidore was very proud of his teammates during the game, when all odds were against them. However, with disappointment faced in the unfair game, the lack of support and bad organization of this tournament, he mentioned to never get involved in the school tournament again. “The bad quality of the referee who were members of teams we won against so they would naturally want us to lose.”
Satyam said that the tournament was not organized properly, and the referee were inexperienced, it felt like it was something between basketball and rugby and there were a lot of aggression in the field. There can be a lot of prospect in which this tournament could be better.
Rafael mentioned that for six weeks “The Internationals”, as they liked to call their improbable group of foreigners who barely knew each other, met at the courts behind Renmin University of China’s (RUC) Suzhou Campus to play basketball and compete against fifteen other teams made of local students from RUC. “We played, sometimes with grace, most of the time with grit. We argued bad calls in a language we didn’t understand and contested perceived injustices from referees with “Chinese characteristics”. However, we fought and persevered, winning five straight games for a chance to play in the final match of the tournament at the Suzhou Olympic Center. The final game was anything but pretty. Physical from the start, the game was hampered by complaints and arguments from both sides. Our opponents played rough, contesting every ball and showing disregard for physical contact. We let their style of play dictate the pace and ended up losing our focus, our cool, and eventually the game by 10 points.” After the game, as he joined his now group of good friends for some beers in an attempt to wash away the disappointment, it dawned on him that he had just played in the final game of a basketball tournament in China, and he thought to himself: “wow, this beer tastes really good…”.
Sunjinmentioned that it was her second time watching a basketball game in real life. There were many people who were not from the school were interested in the game too as it was a match between Chinese and foreigners. However, the game was a bit too aggressive in her opinion and was worried that the players would get injured, but fortunately the game ended without any casualties. “I understand that players were very intensive and serious about the game, but the goal of this game is just for fun and friendships! I really enjoyedwatching this game and I am proud of our team who did their best!”
It was a first-year student’s first time watching a university basketball game after 5 years since she graduated from Bachelors. It reminded her of those times when she went to support football, tennis or basketball matches with her friends. Although the weather was rainy yet cool, she enjoyed the experience and atmosphere of the match. She appreciates the way our team and others had showcase their team spirit. “That moment we – supporters – stood in a row, cheered, shouted and chanted clamorous our school name: SRS proudly. Our team was trying their best, earnest and fair play, and werealize so obviously. It’s the thing that make us proud the most.I got tired and lost my voice due to jumping and screaming, but I felt nothing. It was nothing when compare with the things I and my friends receive. It’s team spirit, our solidarity. So proud to become a part of team. Thank you.” She said.
The fight was tough, and the circumstances were not in our favour, however our team played on high moral grounds and displayed high level of sportsmanship as compared to their opponents. Despite the losing the game of 38 to 28, our team won the hearts of their supporters and were the true winners of this game as they playedthe game fair and with clear conscious.
